TOKYO, Japan – Pormal nang iprinoklama ang official residence ng Philippine ambassador sa Japan bilang kauna-unahan at nag-iisang national historical landmark sa labas ng Pilipinas.

Ayon sa NHCP Guidelines on the Identification, Classification, and Recognition of Historic Sites and Structures in the Philippines, ang isang National Historical Landmark ay “site or structure closely associated with a significant historical event, achievement, characteristic, turning point or stage in Philippine history.”

Sa isang seremonya na ginanap sa Fujimi, Chiyoda-ku noong Marso 3, ipinakita ang historical marker kung saan nakasaad ang mga katagang “Ipinahayag bilang pambansang palatandaang pangkasaysayan sa bisa ng resolusyon blg. 1 ng pambansang komisyong pangkasaysayan ng Pilipinas. 11 Marso 2013.”

Nanguna sa seremonya sina Philippine Ambassador to Japan Manuel M. Lopez at National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) Chair Dr. Maria Serena I. Diokno at sinaksihan ng mga opisyal ng Embahada at Japanese Foreign Ministry. Dumalo rin sa pagtitipon sina dating NHCP Chair Dr. Ambeth R. Ocampo at ilang miyembro ng pamilya Laurel sa pangunguna nina Philippines-Japan Society, Inc. President and Director Francis C. Laurel at dating Philippine Ambassador to Brazil Jose Macario Laurel IV.

“This is a historic and momentous occasion that honors the history and national patrimony of the Philippines,” pahayag ni Lopez.

Matatagpuan sa loob ng 4,500-square meter na pag-aari ng Tokugawa Shogunate, ang Iberian-style residence ay unang itinayo noong 1934 ng pamilya ng kilalang negosyante na si Baron Zenjiro Yasuda, ang great-grandfather ni Yoko Ono na maybahay ng yumaong Beatles member na si John Lennon.

Ito ay binili ni dating pangulo Jose P. Laurel para sa pamahalaan ng Pilipinas noong Marso 31, 1944.

Sa kasalukuyan, ang Kudan na siya rin tawag sa residence dahil sa lokasyon nito na malapit sa Kudanzaka hilltop, ay nagsisilbi bilang tahanan ng ambassador at sentro ng diplomasya at promosyon ng kultura ng Pilipinas.

 “Kudan is the crown jewel of the Philippine Foreign Service, and we should preserve this important part of our diplomatic legacy and heritage,” dagdag ni Lopez.
